Site Reliability Engineer

Dunelm – Remote / London, Bush House · 2019 – Present

In this role I focused on automating away toil, improving developer experience around observability, and increasing visibility into production releases.
Recent work centred around composing parts of the Opentelemetry (CNCF) project within a largely Serverless distributed systems architecture.
Built tools to instrument services and generate rich trace context
and stood up a vendor-agnostic telemetry pipeline between internal systems and observability backends.

Key Strengths and Interests

Library code: Developing reusable semantically versioned modules for application code (Python, Typescript), infra (Terraform, Pulumi Typescript) and CI (Gitlab).
Cloud: Implementing event-driven microservices using AWS services such as Lambda, SQS, SNS etc; deploying container workloads to ECS and EKS.
Kubernetes: Managing and customizing helm deployments to local and remote clusters managed in version controlled IaC with integrated CI.
Tooling: Building custom tools such as a Lambda extension to hook into the lambda lifecycle to collect & export telemetry from the container to an alternative destination to CloudWatch, saving ~£250k/year.
Collaboration: Worked in both consultative and embedded SRE models across backend (price, product, stock) and data (orchestration, dbt cloud) teams to improve reliability and operational visibility.
Communication & Presentation: Experienced presenting to both engineering and business colleagues in biweekly technical demos and Quarterly Business Reviews.
